| | | ‘8 Bits’ is the club hit of the most recent Mind.in.a.Box album R.E.T.R.O. If you want to hear what the Mind.in.a.Box sound will be like in an 8 Bits jacket you should get yourself the album or this very limited single. The title track is present in three versions on this MCD, among which a heavy club track which no doubt will be picked up by the DJ’s around. As B side the track ‘Last Ninja 2’ has been added as exclusive track since part 1 and 3 can be found in the R.E.T.R.O album. This track contains the ultra cool sounds everyone who has played this game will immediately recognize. This is a single that’s only available through Dependent records and is meant for the real fans of Mind.in.a.Box.EN - Gothtronic - TekNoir (8/10) | Für Ihre 'R.E.T.R.O.' betitelte Hommage an den guten alten C64, haben mind.in.a.box sehr gute Presse eingeheimst und diesen Umstand nutzt Dependent um eine limitierte Single hinterher zu schieben, die es allerdings nur über den Online-Shop des Labels zu kaufen gibt.
IN.A.BOX homage to the C64 'R.E.T.R.O' has been a favourite of many and thus was predestined to be put out as a separate release which has now seen the light of day as a limited release, available at the Dependent Records online shop, on 5th March. The single release contains a few mixes of the title track, as well as an exclusive bonus track. But let us start with the '8.5 Bits Mix' coming with a reworked, more complex rhythmic fabric and synth layers, getting ample space to unfold. The only thing distinguishing the '8,6 Bits Mix' from the previous one is the use of Stefan Poiss's clean vocals, making this mix the far better one of the two in my opinion. With 'Last Ninja 2', the trilogy now is completed and once again MIAB succeed in building a modern electronic structure with many details around the original theme.
The 'Club Mix' does not need any detailed description I think. The beats of the original here are highlighted a little more to ensure you can properly dance to it. '8 Bits' is the perfect release for collectors, but apart from the '8,6 Bits Mix' and 'Last Ninja 2' , which admittedly make half of the disc, there's nothing really outstanding about it.

Total: 7.5 / 10EN - Reflections Of Darkness - Sebastian Huhn (7.5/10) | Mind.In.A.Box hold a very special place in my heart. Their second album, 'Dreamweb' to me remains one of the finest of the genre. The intricate story, along with the catchy music and clever lyrics has escalated them to legendary status in my eyes. After the completion of their trilogy, they went more retro with 'R.E.T.R.O' (a review of which can be found elsewhere here), and '8 Bits' is the lead single off the album. There are three mixes of it on this release, two of which sound very similar (The '8.5 bits mix' and '8.6 bits mix') and are far superior to the rather tame album version. The 'Club Version' round of the remixes, it's a standard club mix, with a pronounced bass beat to dance along too. Unfortunately, it loses all the layers of complexity that make MIAB so unique. Completely the maxi is 'The Last Ninja 2'. It's the best of the three 'Last Ninja' instrumentals in my opinion, with lots of variation. It ranges from straight 8-bit chiptunes to a thundering bass with sweeping synths. I feel however a bit disappointed with this maxi. A band renowned for its ingenuity has effectively offered two mixes that are hard to tell apart and a lacklustre club mix. The inclusion of 'The Last Ninja 2' will drive fans insane as buying this MCD is the only way to complete the trilogy of instrumentals. This is no real killer MCD, the album being definitely more interesting!EN - Side-Line - Karl Thomson (7/10) | Die sympathischen Österreicher Mind.
